In 1959 the door was opened for Bob by Jack March at the World
Pro Championships . In 2009 we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bob's achievement .

In 1959 Bob Ryland broke the color barrier in men's professional tennis to compete in the World Pro Championships . In 1956 by winning the American Tennis Association title Bob was admitted to the US championships at Forest Hills now the US Open .In 1945 Bob broke the color barrier in college tennis by being the first black player in the NCAA men's tennis championships .
He is a member of the USTA/Eastern Hall of Fame and the Wayne State University Hall of Fame .

In 2006 he won the USTA 85 and over public parks title .
Next stop International Tennis Hall of Fame .
Still coaching.........
In his career Bob has worked with many top players including
Harold Solomon(French Open finalist),Leslie Allen,Venus Williams,Bruce Foxworth .The list of players is still growing .
Bob gives his time enthusiastically to youth tennis in the parks of New York City or working with USTA/Eastern ranked juniors in Westchester County,NY in the summer .
Arthur Ashe's once commented," My dream as a young boy was to be good enough to beat Bob Ryland". During an interview he gave to acclaimed sportswriter Dick Schaap. He went on to say ,"Bob was some player on clay ,he could give anyone in the world a tough match on clay".
If given the opportunity when he was in his prime who knows how far Bob could have gone .
